Forum The Great Indoors Award 2013
20.2.2014
A New Baroque?
From the entries of The Great Indoors contest, about 270 from 40 countries, a number of trends were evident. There are the empty, sleek, and aesthetically stunning interiors of the past, but these are being replaced by a human scale: a range of recycled materials, styles, and building that points to a revaluation of the existing in creating personal environments. You could ask, do we, like modern nomads, need more tactile, comfortable, and personal spaces, rather than anonymous minimalist interiors, to feel at home? Are these personal interiors a counterpart to the flexible and dynamic lives we lead today?
This evening, we shall be addressing questions such as: ‘has a new baroque announced itself?’, ‘We recognise a cause for the end of minimalism’ and ‘how does the digital era relate to more personal and intuitive spaces?’. These questions will be addressed through the practices of the invited speakers: Brendan Cormier (Archis volume), architect Edouard François, and designers from March Studio and Overtreders W.
Produced in cooperation with: Marres, House for Contemporary Culture, and FRAME magazine.
This symposium is also part of the parallel program 1:1 Sets & Bekleidung, currently on show at The New Institute until 30 March.
