Graindelavoix / Björn Schmelzer

Maastricht Cryptonomies

As of Wednesday 16 July, Graindelavoix will develop a sound installation for Undertones in the crypt of the Basilica of St. Servatius. The Graindelavoix music collective was formed by Björn Schmelzer in 2000. The company performs worldwide and is renowned for its interpretations of European musical traditions. From 16 July to 23 July, this exceptional company touches down in Maastricht. They will work on a new composition in The Basilica of St. Servatius, based on the oldest office chants from the Netherlands, which are dedicated to Saint Servatius.

On Tuesday 22 July, Graindelavoix completes their residency with a performance of the Maastricht Cryptonomies in the Basilica of St. Servatius.

Prior to the concert (22 July), you can attend open rehearsals between Wednesday 16 July and Tuesday 22 July, from 13:00 to 17:00 daily (on presentation of a Undertones pass). For three evenings, Graindelavoix will give a short performance in Marres, and Björn Schmelzer will give a lecture and performance on Wednesday 23 July, in which he talks about the origins and working process of the Maastricht Cryptonomies.

In the Maastricht Cryptonomies, Graindelavoix interprets the antiphons and responsoria of Saint Servatius. The medieval legend surrounding St. Servatius tells of how the saint's body repeatedly disappeared from the Basilica's crypt, only to appear elsewhere to perform a miracle. Graindelavoix sees parallels between the crypt and a sound box: a hollow chamber that exudes maximum resonance.
